HDD was developed from oilfield technology and enables pipelines to be installed beneath canals, rivers, estuaries, railways, roads and protected areas. It does not require pits or shafts and working area for the equipment is relatively small.
The technique is, in simplistic terms, to drill a pilot hole from one point to another, ream out the hole to the required diameter and then pull the pipeline back through the prepared hole, which is constantly lubricated and lined with Bentonite mud. HDD causes minimal disruption to the environment, is preferred by all authorities; and is ideal for locations and areas of landscaped importance. HDD can be used to typically install steel pipes (for oil and gas and water industry) and HDPE pipes (for telecommunication, electric cables and gas lines). Depths of drilling profile (i.e., cover) are typically 10 to 30 metres, with lengths up to 1500 metres, and diametres up to 1200 mm. Key Benefits
